Fire Incident Update – 15 April 2025

Press Release: 15th April, 2025 – In continuation of its regular updates shared regarding the fire incident at Korangi Creek, TPL confirms that the fire which erupted on the eve of March 28, 2025, naturally extinguished itself in the early hours of today. This timeline of 2-3 weeks for the fire to extinguish was in line with feedback received from industry experts and as per TPL’s internal assessment. However, under the guidance of the Technical Committee and as a precautionary measure, the fire was reignited deliberately this afternoon to ensure that no residual gas remains which could be harmful to the public.

We expect the Technical Committee and/or the relevant local authorities to also provide an update on the situation in due course. As was shared earlier, on April 8, 2025, the Ministry of Energy (Petroleum Division) had constituted a Technical Committee comprising of representatives from PPL, OGDCL and PRL to oversee the assessment and containment efforts of the fire incident at Korangi Creek.

TPL continues to actively facilitate the work of the Technical Committee in every possible way, and remains fully supportive of this proactive and collaborative initiative. Furthermore, TPL greatly appreciates the continued guidance, support, and proactive stance provided on this matter by the Government of Pakistan, the Mayor Karachi, the Local Authorities, the District Administration, CBKC, and by industry leaders including PRL and PPL.

TPL confirms that as per its internal policy, it was in full compliance with legal, safety, and operational standards before initiating the test water boring activity and had obtained all necessary No-Objection Certificates (NOCs) from the relevant regulatory bodies. TPL upholds the highest standards of governance, compliance, and responsibility in all its operations and remains committed to ensuring accurate, transparent, and timely dissemination of information to its stakeholders, partners, and the public at large at all times.
